Мы не располагаем фотографиями, свидетельствующими о зверствах в ГУЛАГе[432]. Поскольку лагеря ликвидировались постепенно и многие из них превратились в регулярно действующие тюрьмы, отсутствовали свидетельства и документация ГУЛАГа извне (этот пробел, который мог быть заполнен только в момент исторического перелома, также указывает на преемственность государственного аппарата, ответственного за российскую пенитенциарную систему). Масштабы гулаговских зверств едва ли можно представить по сохранившимся фотографиям: тесные вагоны, транспортирующие узников, нигде не показаны; бараки на снимках кажутся аккуратными и прилично устроенными; сами заключенные редко выглядят усталыми или истощенными, и они всегда живые[433].
