В черновой рукописи 1833–1834 годов и редакции 1835 года нос исчезает «сего февраля 23 числа». В редакции 1836 года, опубликованной в «Современнике», стоит дата «25 апреля». В последнем варианте, опубликованном в 1942 году в Полном собрании сочинений Гоголя – «25 марта».
