Что же касается их материальной культуры, то долгое время на австралийском континенте господствовали типологически палеолитические индустрии каменных отщепов. И только относительно недавно (по «доисторическим» меркам) там появился культурный комплекс, связанный с культурами микролитов. Носители микролитических культур появились в Австралии около 4 тыс. до н. э. одновременно со собакой динго [Bowdler, O'Connor 1991; Bowdler 2000; McConvell 1996]. Примерно в это же время на континенте распространились языки семьи пама-ньюнгам, составляющие подавляющее большинство языков аборигенов Австралии и довольно близкие между собой [Veth 2000]. Данные генетики говорят о некоторых общих маркерах у аборигенов северной Австралии и южной Индии [Windschuttle, Gillen 2002; Redd, Stoneking 1999]. Все это, возможно, и объясняет атипичность аборигенов Австралии, делая невозможным непосредственное привлечение материалов по ним для реконструкций первобытной истории.
