Почти любое историческое событие порождает оспариваемые версии истории, но в случае длящегося уже более 140 лет конфликта на территории исторической Палестины противоречия между этими версиями оказались особенно фундаментальными, а степень убежденности обеих сторон в своей исключительной правоте — беспримерно высокой.
Сионисты, палестинцы, израильтяне, арабские страны региона, различные великие державы, международные организации и бесчисленные кандидаты в миротворцы так и не смогли выработать взаимоприемлемого решения для трагического конфликта двух национальных общин, претендующих на одну и ту же территорию, и число жизней, разрушенных, оборванных или просто омраченных этими событиями, пока только растет.
Канадский историк Нил Каплан сделал своей задачей максимально беспристрастно изложить историческую канву этого спора, проанализировав как материальные, так и нематериальные факторы, которые препятствуют мирному урегулированию.
