В книге автор раскрывает образ одного из трех главных богов индуизма, каким он предстает в текстах Вед и Пуран. Будучи выдающимся искусствоведом и философом, Стелла сочетает увлекательность изложения с глубоким философским анализом мифа Шивы, затрагивая различные уровни значений, от психологических до метафизических. Сопоставление изложения одних и тех же сюжетов в различных источниках помогает автору выявить все богатство заложенных в них смыслов, а также свести противоречивые и несовместимые, казалось бы, черты в непротиворечивый, целостный и весьма впечатляющий образ.
