В эпоху авангарда маргинальность, аутсайдерство, безумие, странность, алогизм становятся новыми «объектами желания». Кризис канона классической эстетики привел к тому, что новые течения в искусстве стали включать в свой метанарратив не замечаемое ранее творчество аутсайдеров. Почему произведения душевнобольных, социальных маргиналов и визионеров превратились в значимые художественные феномены? Как тексты и произведения художников авангарда расширили понимание границ искусства? Искусствовед Анна Суворова в своей книге исследует этапы этого процесса. Сначала экспрессионисты использовали аутсайдерские мотивы и образы, затем апелляции сюрреалистов к алогизму и идеям «безумия» привели к отказу от стигматизации душевной болезни, – а потом, наконец, институциональные практики, от ар брюта и деятельности Жана Дюбюффе до выставок 2010-х годов, окончательно легитимировали «странное искусство».
