Мы есть то, что мы знаем и умеем. Знания и умение выражают индивидуальную сущность каждого человека, его интеллектуальные способности. Развитие интеллекта явилось высшим проявлением эволюции человека. Но как нет двух одинаковых организмов, так и уровень интеллекта у всех разный. Людей с очень высоким уровнем интеллекта, с обширными знаниями и широкими интересами называют интеллектуалами. Среди них всегда были люди – генераторы новых идей и полезных изобретений. Хотя они не занимали ключевых позиций, многие из них способствовали развитию прогресса истории. Общее проявление исключительности этих интеллектуалов называется интеллектуальностью.
Развитию интеллекта и интеллектуальности посвящено мало книг, они рассчитаны на читателей с обширными знаниями и глубоким интересом к предмету, насыщены научным материалом и интеллектуальными рассуждениями. Предлагаемая книга отличается тем, что она рассчитана на широкий круг неподготовленных читателей и не требует от них специальных знаний, кроме общего интереса к истории культуры. В ней изложен ход возникновения, формирования и развития интеллекта и, без упрощения предмета, представлено место и значение интеллектуализма в истории. Написанная в форме живых рассказов, она содержит интересные жизнеописания и яркие факты истории культуры, богато украшена иллюстрациями и стихами на исторические темы. Цивилизации Запада и Востока с самого начала шли разными путями, и ход развития интеллектуализма в них тоже шёл по-разному. Эта книга ограничена описанием интеллектуализма только в западном мире.
