Обычно и историки, и критики для иллюстрации того, насколько всепроникающей стала эта научная программа, приводят перечень современных нейронаук, возникших после 1990‑х годов. Прежде всего выделяют нейроантропологию, нейроархеологию, нейроэкономику, нейрообразование, нейроэстетику, нейроэтику, нейрополитику, нейросоциологию и т. п. Правда, критики настаивают на том, что зачастую префикс «нейро» оказывается данью моде, способом закрепиться и выделиться в современной изменчивой реальности. Например, анализируя случай нейроантропологии, они замечают: «Антропологическое исследование поддерживающего лечения опиоидной зависимости может быть названо „нейроантропологией“… нейроантропология возникает в этнографических исследованиях с помощью наклеивания ярлыка „нейрокогнитивный“ на навыки, необходимые для регби или капоэйры. Операция переименования носит чисто косметический характер и представляет собой хороший маркетинговый ход, при этом не принося никаких методологических, эмпирических или концептуальных выгод» (Vidal F., Ortega F.
